E
stablished in 1988 as the resident orchestral ensemble of the greater Reston area,
the Reston Chamber Orchestra (RCO) was given the dual mission of bringing orchestral music to Reston
and providing opportunities for the many talented musicians in the area. The RCO specialized in
Baroque and early classical masterpieces.
A
the orchestra grew in the size and abilities under the able direction of Maestro Fleary,
the professional and amateur level musicians rose to the challenge of his award winning selections from the
Contemporary and Americana literature. In light of this expanded repertoire, the
Board voted in 2004 to change its name to the Reston Community Orchestra.
R
CO players represent all ages and professions, and include retirees, advanced high school students
and recent graduates. There are frequently graduates of South Lakes High School, who contribute
to the orchestra with their talented playing.
N
ew players are always welcome. Because of the need for a balanced sound, however, musicians are
added to the orchestra by invitation from the conductor. There is a standing invitation for qualified string players.
We have a separate need for volunteer board members and staff from the community. Participation
on any level is welcome and greatly appreciated.
T
he RCO is a not-for-profit organization, which is funded through advertising
and contributions from orchestra members and the public. While no admission is
charged, funds received from the freewill offerings at each concert are gratefully accepted
and go to support the orchestra, local charities, and community events.
